NOD

Support

Last updated 3 November 2026

Most NOD problems are one of the five things below, and nearly all of them are network or installation related. Work down the list — it is ordered by how often each one is the answer.

Start here

The five things NOD needs: X-Plane 12 running on your Mac · the NOD companion installed · X-Plane fully restarted since you installed it · both devices on the same network · Local Network permission granted to NOD.

Common questions

NOD can’t find my Mac

NOD finds your Mac automatically — there is nothing to type in. If it stays on Looking for your computer, check these in order:

  1. Is X-Plane 12 actually running? The NOD companion only answers while X-Plane is open.
  2. Did you fully quit and reopen X-Plane after installing? This is the most common cause. Reloading plugins from inside X-Plane does not pick up a newly installed add-on. Quit X-Plane completely, then open it again.
  3. Are both devices on the same network? Same Wi-Fi name, and not a guest network. Guest networks deliberately block devices from seeing each other. A Mac on Ethernet and an iPhone on Wi-Fi is fine, as long as they are the same network.
  4. Is Local Network permission on? iOS Settings › NOD › Local Network. Without it NOD cannot see your Mac at all.
  5. Firewall. If macOS asked whether to allow incoming connections for X-Plane, allow it. System Settings › Network › Firewall.

Then tap SEARCH AGAIN in the app. It appears under the message after about ten seconds of searching, and looks again without disturbing anything else.

X-Plane isn’t responding to my head movement

If NOD shows it is connected but the view does not move, the usual cause is that no neutral has been set yet. NOD sends nothing until you press CENTER.

Sit the way you actually fly, look straight ahead, and press CENTER. The view should follow immediately.

If the app says Demo ended, your ten free minutes are used up — your setup is fine and tracking resumes as soon as you unlock NOD Core.

The view sits at an odd angle, or drifts off-centre

Press CENTER again while sitting the way you normally fly. Nine times out of ten that is it.

NOD takes your head position at the moment you press CENTER as the neutral, so pressing it while leaning, or while glancing at the phone, makes that leaning position the new “straight ahead”.

Turning the phone between portrait and landscape also asks for a fresh CENTER, because the frame of reference has genuinely changed.

NOD keeps losing my face

Stand the iPhone facing you, about an arm’s length away, upright and roughly at face height. Anything that holds it steady works.

Even light on your face helps, and a bright window directly behind you hurts — the camera is looking into the light.

Tracking resumes by itself when your face comes back, and you do not need to press CENTER again. If it stays stuck, a Retry tracking button appears after about eight seconds; it restarts the camera only and keeps your neutral.

The app says “NOD needs updating”

This means the iPhone app and the Mac companion are different versions and cannot talk to each other properly.

Update both to the current release: install the latest NOD for Mac from the download page, quit and reopen X-Plane, and make sure the iPhone app is up to date in the App Store.

How do I install the Mac companion?
  1. Download NOD for X-Plane.dmg from the download page, on the Mac that runs X-Plane.
  2. Open it and run Install NOD. It finds your X-Plane 12 installation and puts the companion in place. If it cannot find X-Plane, it asks you to pick the X-Plane 12 folder — the one containing X-Plane.app.
  3. Quit X-Plane 12 completely and open it again.
  4. Open NOD on your iPhone. It finds the Mac by itself.
How does the free time work?

NOD gives you ten minutes of successful simulator tracking, once, so you can prove it works on your own setup before buying anything.

Only real tracking counts. Time spent looking for your Mac, paused, or with NOD in the background does not use the allowance. Settings shows how much is left at any time.

When it runs out your setup keeps working — only the head tracking output stops. Unlocking NOD Core resumes it immediately, on the same connection, without re-centring.

I already bought NOD Core — how do I get it back?

Open NOD, go to Settings and tap Restore Purchases. It is also on the purchase screen.

Make sure the iPhone is signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with. NOD Core is a one-time purchase tied to that account, so it restores on any device you sign in to — at no extra cost.

Which setups are supported?

X-Plane 12 on a Mac, an iPhone that supports face tracking, and both on the same local network. That is the combination we have verified end to end on real hardware, and it is the only one we claim.

NOD Desktop

NOD Desktop tracks your head with your Mac’s own camera — no iPhone needed. It works with the same X-Plane companion, installed by Install NOD from the NOD Desktop download.

Installing NOD Desktop
  1. Download NOD-Desktop-1.0.dmg from the download page and open it.
  2. Drag NOD Desktop into Applications.
  3. Open Install NOD from the same window and follow the prompts. It adds the X-Plane companion, or replaces an older one.
  4. Quit X-Plane 12 completely and open it again.
  5. Open NOD Desktop from Applications.
Allowing the camera

The first time you press Start Tracking, macOS asks whether NOD Desktop may use the camera. Click Allow. Images are processed on your Mac and never stored or sent.

If you clicked Don’t Allow: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera, switch on NOD Desktop, then quit and reopen it.

Connecting to X-Plane and centring the view
  1. With X-Plane 12 running and the companion installed, press Start Tracking. The X-PLANE status shows when X-Plane is listening.
  2. Sit the way you fly, look at the screen and press Center View (⌃⌥C).
  3. Pause (⌃⌥P) holds the view still; press it again to carry on.

If X-Plane never connects, it is almost always the companion: run Install NOD again and fully restart X-Plane.

Signing in, and the free 10 minutes

Sign in with your email: NOD emails you a 6-digit code. There is no password.

Your first 10 minutes of tracking are free. The minutes are counted on your NOD account, so they are the same on every Mac and are not reset by reinstalling.

NOD Core and NOD Pro

NOD Core — $9.99 once. Unlimited head tracking. It keeps working offline.

NOD Pro — $4.99 a month, added to Core. Flight History, Replay Approach and Pilot Review. It renews every month until you cancel, and it needs a separate NOD Core purchase.

Buy from inside NOD Desktop, signed in: open your account and press Buy NOD Core, or Upgrade to Pro once you own Core. Pay on the page that opens, then come back to NOD: the purchase activates on this Mac by itself.

Restoring purchases on a new Mac or after reinstalling

Sign in with the same email, then open your account and press Restore Purchases. Core and Pro come back on that Mac at no extra cost.

Cancelling or managing NOD Pro

Open your account in NOD Desktop and press Manage Subscription. It opens your Gumroad Library, where Manage membership lets you cancel; the link in your Gumroad receipt works too. Pro keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for, and NOD Desktop shows the date. Core is not affected.

Updating NOD Desktop

NOD Desktop checks for updates by itself once a day, after asking you the first time. You can also choose NOD Desktop › Check for Updates…. NOD asks before installing anything. Your account, purchases, settings and saved flights stay as they are.

NOD Desktop requirements
  • A Mac running macOS 14 or later, with a camera
  • X-Plane 12 on the same Mac
  • An internet connection to sign in and to buy or restore purchases
